Director-General Challenges HEA Staff to Leave Lasting Legacy in Higher Education

The Director-General of the Higher Education Authority (HEA), Professor Kazhila C. Chinsembu, challenged the members of Management and Staff to work to achieve greater tangible outputs that will outlive everyone currently working at the Authority and leave behind lasting legacies.

Professor Chinsembu said this when he addressed the members of Management and Staff of HEA immediately after being appointed as Director-General of HEA.

“I have come here to lead the team so that we can achieve greater things, not for ourselves, but to achieve tangible outputs that will outlive us so that even if we are not here people will remember that there was a contribution that was made by us,” Professor Chinsembu said.

The Director-General further stated that his success as the new Chief Executive Officer of the Authority depended on the success of everyone at HEA.

“Your roles here are very important and I will be counting on you to deliver in your specific roles,” he said, adding, “My success depends on your success as your success is my success and my success is your success and, together, we can achieve what we are employed here to achieve.”

The Director-General thanked everyone for their warm welcome, stating that he was excited to be at the helm of the Authority and to work with everyone even as change was inevitable to HEA in order for it to function better and help shape the higher education subsector into the vision of what His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Zambia, Mr. Hakainde Hichilema, wants it to be.

“As we go along, certain things will begin to change,” Professor Chinsembu said, continuing, “There will be some disruptions and inconveniences because certain things are going to change but even though sometimes change is painful, that is what change is meant to achieve because we want to change, first of all, the institution before we can clean the higher education sector.”

Professor Chinsembu emphasised that his appointment by the Board of the Authority, with the approval of the Minister of Education, was meant to clean the higher education subsector on behalf of the Government. He stressed the need to fix things in the sector in order to bring back respect for higher education credentials in the country.

Professor Chinsembu was appointed as Director-General of HEA on 22nd April, 2024.
