The Men of HEA Celebrating Women on Women’s Day
The men of the Higher Education Authority (HEA) joined the women of HEA in celebrating International Women’s Day under the theme, “For All Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment,” by sharing their personal reflections on what the day means to them.
Through their own words, the men of HEA staff expressed their thoughts on the significance of this year’s theme, the Authority’s role in supporting women, and the advice that they would give to their younger selves about supporting women’s rights.
Here’s what they had to say.

Mr. Julius Phiri
Driver
Mr. Musoba: As a man, what does International Women’s Day mean to you?
Mr. Phiri: International Women’s Day is a crucial reminder to reflect on the progress made in women’s rights, and more importantly, to acknowledge the work that still needs to be done. It’s a day to celebrate the achievements of women throughout history and across the globe, and to reaffirm my commitment to supporting gender equality. It’s a day for action, for listening, and for learning how to be a better ally.
Mr. Musoba: Why is this year’s theme, “For ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment,” important to you?
Mr. Phiri: This theme highlights the inclusive nature of the fight for gender equality. “For ALL Women and Girls” emphasises that no one should be left behind, regardless of their background, race, religion, or any other factor.
“Rights, Equality, Empowerment” outlines the core tenets needed to achieve true equality. Rights ensure legal protections, equality guarantees fair treatment, and empowerment provides the tools and resources for women and girls to thrive. This comprehensive approach is essential for dismantling systemic barriers.
Mr. Musoba: How does HEA contribute to the empowerment of women?
Mr. Phiri: In general, HEA can contribute to the empowerment of women through:
- Providing educational opportunities.
- Offering skills training and mentorship.
- Creating safe and inclusive workplaces.
- Supporting women’s leadership and decision-making roles.
- Advocating for policies that promote gender equality.
- Facilitating access to resources and funding.
Mr. Musoba: What advice would you give to your younger self about supporting women’s rights?
Mr. Phiri: Listen more. Actively seek out and amplify women’s voices. Challenge your own biases and assumptions. Understand that being an ally is an ongoing process, not a one-time event. Be courageous in speaking out against inequality and injustice. Learn about the history of feminism, and understand the work that has been done by women over the years.
Mr. Musoba: What message do you have for young men about respecting and uplifting women?
Mr. Phiri: Respect is the foundation of any healthy relationship. Treat all women with dignity and kindness. Recognize their equal worth and potential. Challenge harmful stereotypes and sexist behaviour. Be a supportive ally, and amplify women’s voices. Understand that true strength lies in equality and collaboration, not dominance. Learn to listen, and learn to value the opinions and contributions of the women around you.
