HEA Consults Professional Bodies on the Development of Standards in HEIs
The Higher Education Authority (HEA) held a consultative workshop with professional bodies to consult on the development of standards for Higher Education Institutions (HEIs).
HEA held the workshop in fulfilling the requirements from the Higher Education (Amendment) Act, 2021, which amended the Higher Education Act No. 4 of 2013, to state that the Authority in consultation with relevant professional institutions would set standards for HEIs.
Speaking when giving his opening remarks, HEA Director-General, Prof. Stephen Simukanga, expressed his delight at the opportunity that has been presented to the Authority through the Amendment Act for it to work in close collaboration with the Professional Bodies.
“Ladies and Gentlemen, whereas previously, we worked in isolation as regulatory and professional bodies, today, we have an opportunity to work together towards a common goal of assuring quality in higher education,” Prof. Simukanga said.
The Director-General stated that the tools that would be developed with the professional bodies were critical in ensuring that the registration of HEIs was not only based on sound but realistic requirements and standards that would foster the development of a strong higher education sector.
“In this regard, I implore you as workshop participants to take this meeting seriously and be as open as possible in all the deliberations,” Prof. Simukanga stated.
Prof. Simukanga assured the professional bodies that the consultative workshop would not be an end in itself, but signalled the beginning of collaboration between HEA and relevant professional bodies in the Authority’s quest to improve the quality of higher education in Zambia.
Invited to the consultative workshop and in attendance were representatives from the Health Professions Council of Zambia (HPCZ), Ministry of Education, Nursing and Midwifery Council of Zambia (NMCZ), Teaching Council of Zambia (TCZ) and Zambia Institute of Chartered Accountants (ZICA).
