“HEA Committed to Strengthening Global Partnership” – Professor Chinsembu
The Higher Education Authority (HEA) has reiterated its commitment to strengthening global partnerships that contribute to Zambia’s higher education transformation agenda, particularly in fostering international collaboration and expanding academic linkages across the sector.
Speaking when an Indian delegation visited HEA offices, the Director-General, Professor Kazhila C. Chinsembu, said Zambia had vast land available for those seeking opportunities to grow the higher education sector, especially in areas of creativity and innovation.
Professor Chinsembu noted that the historical ties shared between the two countries made collaboration, especially in the education sector, easy and natural.
He added that India had, for a long time, not only been a major supplier to Zambia’s pharmaceutical industry but had also been a leader in providing solutions in ICT and mathematics.
Professor Chinsembu urged the Indian delegation to explore opportunities to introduce training programmes anchored on critical skills development, as opposed to the traditional programmes currently offered by most Higher Education Institutions in the country.
“India has a strong foundation in ICT and mathematics, and we expect more collaborations in those areas so that there can also be an improvement in the teaching of ICT,” said Professor Chinsembu.
He further informed the delegation that Zambia had available farming blocks suitable for agricultural training programmes and highlighted the remarkable bumper harvests the country had recorded in recent years.
Professor Chinsembu stated that India had achieved notable progress in technology-driven education, research output, and skills development, and that Zambia was ready for the delegation to explore areas that would academically benefit students.
Leading the Indian delegation, the University of Edenberg Chancellor, Dr. Gunasekar Ariyamunthu, said the team was interested in offering training programmes that not only prepare graduates for employment but also empower them to create their own jobs.
Dr. Gunasekar said his team possessed vast expertise and was eager to work with Zambia, a country with a long history of providing education services respected globally.
He added that, given Zambia’s abundant natural resources such as minerals, the delegation would explore training programmes focusing on the mining industry, with an emphasis on value addition.
Dr. Gunasekar further noted that Zambia and India were moving at a similar pace in higher education transformation, with both countries prioritising curriculum and syllabus reforms and entrepreneurial skills development, advances that would reshape the profiles of students in colleges and universities in the near future.
