1,277 Learning Programmes from 106 Public and Private HEIs Gazetted
The Higher Education Authority (HEA) has in accordance with the provision of the Higher Education Act No. 4 of 2013 and Statutory Instrument No. 25 of 2016 Part III Regulation 15, gazetted 1,277 accredited learning programmes from 106 named public and private Higher Education Institutions (HEIs).
The learning programmes were published in Gazette Notice No. 943 of 2024, which appeared in the Government Gazette No. 7638, Vol. LX, No. 103, dated Friday, 6th September, 2024, Lusaka. This gazetted list was as of 31st March, 2024.
The 1,277 accredited learning programmes are broken down as follows: 602 from 47 private universities, 581 from 8 public universities, 56 from 42 private colleges, 30 from 8 private university colleges and 8 from a public technical university college.
The most accredited learning programmes per HEI in each category are as follows: for public universities, Copperbelt University has 147 accredited learning programmes, University of Zambia has 139 accredited learning programmes, and Mulungushi University has 74 accredited learning programmes.
For private universities, Zambian Open University has 58 accredited learning programmes, ZCAS University has 47 accredited learning programmes, Rockview University has 43 accredited learning programmes, and DMI-St. Eugene University has 41 accredited learning programmes.
Zambia University College of Technology, a public HEI and the only technical university college in Zambia, has 8 accredited learning programmes.
For private university colleges, George Benson Christian University College, Jamodha University College and UNICOHS University College each have 5 accredited learning programmes.
For private colleges, Ndola Community Health Assistant Training School and Shalom School of Health and Business each have 3 accredited learning programmes.
The Higher Education (Amendment) Act, 2021 Part IVA Section 23B (1) and (2) prohibits an HEI from offering a learning programme which is not accredited by HEA and prescribes that an HEI which contravenes this commits an offence and is liable, on conviction, to a fine not exceeding 200,000 penalty units or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years, or to both.
It is the responsibility of all HEIs in the country to ensure that all the learning programmes that they offer are submitted to HEA for accreditation so that the learning programmes are quality assured and the graduates of these learning programmes are recognised by the Zambia Qualifications Authority (ZAQA) as having valid qualifications.
HEA continues to warn the general public not to enrol at any private institution that is not registered neither should they enrol in any learning programme from both private and public HEIs that has not been accredited as their qualification will not be recognised.
