160 Registered and Recognised HEIs Gazetted
The Higher Education Authority (HEA) has in accordance with the provision of the Higher Education Act No. 4 of 2013 Part IV Section 48, gazetted 160 private and public Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) that are registered and recognised by the Authority, respectively.
The list of HEIs comprises of private and public universities, university colleges, technical university college, Institutions for Specialised Training of Professionals in a Specified Field and colleges that have been registered and recognised by HEA.
This list of HEIs was published in the Gazette Notice No. 942 of 2024, which appeared in the Government Gazette No. 7638, Vol. LX, No. 103, dated Friday, 6th September, 2024, Lusaka. This gazetted list was as of 31st March, 2024.
The 160 gazetted HEIs are broken down into 141 private HEIs and 19 public HEIs. These are further broken down into 82 private colleges, 50 private universities, 10 public universities, 9 private university colleges, 5 public colleges, 3 public Institutions for Specialised Training of Professionals in a Specified Field, and a public Technical University College, Zambia University College of Technology, the only technical university or college in Zambia.
The Higher Education Act No. 4 of 2013 Part IV Section 15 (1) and (2) prohibits a person from operating a private HEI unless the private HEI is registered by HEA and prescribes that a person who contravenes the Law commits an offence and is liable, upon conviction, to a fine not exceeding one million penalty units or to imprisonment for a period not exceeding three years, or to both.
HEA continues to warn the general public not to enrol at any private institution not registered neither should they enrol in any learning programme from both private and public HEIs that has not been accredited as their qualification will not be recognised.
