Veteran Journalist Exposes the Media’s Blind Spot on Higher Education
Veteran broadcaster and Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC) Controller News, Mr. Grevazio Zulu, delivered a sobering challenge to journalists gathered for the Higher Education Authority (HEA) Summer School Media Training after they admitted to not covering higher education in the past 30 days.
Speaking during the official opening of the two-day workshop held on Tuesday and Wednesday, 10th and 11th February, 2025, at Sarovah Hotel in Lusaka, Mr. Zulu posed a single, piercing question to no raised hands, “In the last 30 days, how many of you have written a story about higher education?”
In that silence lay the very crisis he sought to confront, one that revealed how little attention is given to a sector that shapes national development, economic transformation and the country’s future.
“Why doesn’t higher education matter to us?” Mr. Zulu pressed further. “Zero stories in 30 days, maybe two in 60. This is because we do not fully understand the impact and importance of higher education.”
He urged journalists to dig deeper, ask harder questions and pursue stories that do more than fill tomorrow’s headlines but stories that help shape a nation’s destiny.
