Zambia is commemorating World AIDS day under the theme ‘End inequalities. End AIDS. End Pandemics’, with the Ministry of Health calling on community leaders and all citizens to rally together to confront the inequalities that drive AIDS and to reach people who are currently not receiving essential HIV services.

In commemorating the day, the Zambian Republican President, His Excellency, Mr. Hakainde Hichilema, has said that 1.5 million Zambians are living with HIV/AIDS and Zambia has signed up to the Sustainable Development Goals of ending AIDS by 2030.

“Let’s pledge to spread more awareness against this menace in memory of the loved ones we’ve lost,” H.E. Mr. Hichilema said.

And speaking about the day, HEA Director-General, Prof.  Stephen Simukanga, lauded the importance of testing, lamenting the brain drain that Zambia experienced due to the lives that were lost to the scourge.

“As the President has said, the commitment to ending the scourge and ensuring that Zambia does not experience another brain drain, people need to be tested,” Prof. Simukanga said, adding, “and discrimination has to stop in order for all the inequalities to be properly addressed.”

HEA continues to remind everyone that getting tested today is the surest way of ending AIDS. Further the Authority reminds everyone to be there for a loved one.
