Preparations for the launch of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) by the Lusaka Provincial Preparatory Committee have reached an advanced stage, with the final planning meeting held yesterday, Tuesday, 18th November, 2025.

During the meeting, stakeholders were encouraged to strengthen their support towards the success of the commemoration, which will take place on 25th November, 2025, at Chinyunyu Secondary School Grounds in Rufunsa District, under the theme “Unite to End Digital Violence Against All Women and Girls.”

Provincial Cultural Affairs Coordinator, Ms. Cindy Chileshe, emphasised the importance of collaboration among stakeholders to ensure that the event’s expectations are met.

“Lusaka provincial officials will meet with the Rufunsa District leadership to finalise arrangements on how the programme will run,” Ms. Chileshe said, adding, “The budget for the event remains open. This will allow organisations to pick up outstanding items if they wish to contribute further.”

HEA’s Role in the Commemoration

The Higher Education Authority (HEA) reaffirms the importance of participating in this year’s 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence not only as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), but more importantly, as a commitment to safeguarding the well-being of learners in higher education. HEA believes that a violence-free academic environment is essential for meaningful learning, personal growth and the development of a productive citizenry. Strengthening the fight against GBV therefore directly contributes to the quality of life of students and, ultimately, to Zambia’s social and economic progress.

As an institution mandated to promote quality and ethical standards in higher education, HEA recognises the critical role that learning environments play in shaping social behaviours, attitudes and responses to GBV.

HEA’s participation will underscore the need to integrate GBV awareness, prevention strategies and protection mechanisms within Higher Education Institutions (HEIs).

By taking part in this event, HEA aims to support national efforts to eliminate GBV through sensitisation, community engagement and collaboration with stakeholders to promote equitable and respectful relationships among young people, educators and communities.

The Authority believes that investing in GBV prevention aligns with its commitment to protecting students and staff across HEIs.

As the countdown to 25th November continues, the organising committee remains confident that with strengthened collaboration and renewed commitment, the 2025 commemorations in Rufunsa will send a powerful message of unity, awareness and action.

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is an annual international campaign that begins on 25th November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and ends on 10th December, Human Rights Day.

HEA further encourages all HEIs to actively participate in this year’s commemorations and to contact their respective Provincial Offices, or the Lusaka Provincial Office using the address below, for guidance on how they can contribute.
