The Loans and Scholarships Board in the Ministry of Higher Education is next year expected to start recovering loans from 4 Thousand 8 Hundred and 70 beneficiaries employed in government institutions.
Higher Education Loans and Scholarships Board Acting Director Ireen Chirwa says beneficiaries first obtained loans in 2004 while studying at Copperbelt University and the University of Zambia.
Mrs. Chirwa says the Ministry engaged the Public Service Management Division (PSMD) to trace the former students.
She told ZNBC news in an interview that the Ministry of higher Education now has a legal framework through the Higher Education Act, of 2016 which gives mandate to the board to recover the loans from former students.
Mrs. Chirwa said she is hopeful that the board will put up structures and systems in place to perform better than the bursaries committee.
