Prof. Stephen Simukanga Graduated from the University of Zambia in 1982 with a degree in Metallurgy and Mineral Processing.  After graduating he worked for the Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines in Luanshya at the Copper Smelter from 1982 to November 1984.  He joined the University of Zambia in 1985 as a Staff Development Fellow. He holds a PhD in Process Metallurgy from the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, UK.  He is a Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining and Chartered Engineer of the Engineering Council of the United Kingdom.  He is also a Fellow of both the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and the Engineering Institution of Zambia.  He served as Registrar of the Engineers’ Registration Board of Zambia for 10 years, from 2000 to 2010. He also served as Coordinator of the Mineral Resources Unit of the United Nations University Institute for Natural Resources in Africa, located at the School of Mines of the University of Zambia from 2003 to 2015.

He was Vice-Chancellor of the University of Zambia for 8 years, from July 2007 to June 2015.  Prior to becoming Vice Chancellor of the University of Zambia in 2007, he served the University of Zambia for 23 years, as a lecturer/Researcher in the School of Mines of the University of Zambia where he rose to the position of Professor in Metallurgy and Mineral Processing.  Stephen Simukanga has served as visiting lecturer at the University of Cape Town and University of Zimbabwe. He has also served as External Examiner in both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in other universities. 

Prof. Simukanga joined the Higher Education Authority in January 2016 as its first Director General.  Its function is to regulate the high education sector in Zambia. He brings to the Higher Education Authority wide range of experience in High Education.
